Research Paper

FR 3170: Contemporary French Civilization

In this French course, we studied various aspects of contemporary France, including its important economic sectors. As a part of this course, I was tasked to research and write about a product within a certain economic sector. I chose perfume, which is a part of the luxury sector. Through this assignment, I was able to expand my researching and essay writing skills in French. In addition, I gained relevant technical vocabulary. It proved difficult to find relevant sources and to convey the information concisely, but the research paper challenged me to learn how to conduct meaningful research in a foreign language.

Scene Description

FR 4090: Writing in French II

As a part of this French course, voice, technique, point of view, and style were explored through short writing prompts, or incitations. For a descriptive writing exercise, I was tasked to describe a scene of a place I knew well in French. We were also challenged to express the scene using the five senses. I chose my family’s property in Highlands, NC, and depicted the drive and entrance scenery to the house. This writing assignment not only allowed me to practice and improve my French writing skills, vocabulary, and grammar, but also forced me to expand my creativity. Although short, this description assignment was challenging because I had to clarify my thoughts and emotions in my non-dominant language.

Cultural Artifacts

Virtual Museum Project

FR 3000: Survey of French Literature

As a final project, I was tasked, along with a partner, to create a virtual art museum demonstrating a common theme in two literary works we studied. We chose to study the imagery of "Savage vs. Civilized" during the French colonial period, which we explored in L'ingénu by Voltaire and Lettres Persanes by Montesquieu. The project proved challenging because we had to find paintings that were created during the imperial period and from the perspective of European artists. Through the virtual museum project, I was able further my analysis skills. We studied the symbolism and cultural significance of the works as well.

Translation Project

FR 4980: Independent Study in French

As a part of this course, I translated a manuscript written in Haiti. The letter is dated from 1802 and gives a glimpse of the Haitian Revolution, as well as the lives of those living in Cap-Haitian at the time. It reveals the local politics, laws, and business dealing during this time, as well as critical events in the Revolution. There was not much information about this letter, so I had to conduct thorough research of the events, people, and time period mentioned in the manuscript. Translating the document proved difficult as the penmanship was quite complicated to read, some words were incomplete, and the syntax was difficult. However, through this project, I was able to advance my French reading and critical thinking skills.

Public / Global Health Artifacts

Literature Review: HIV Testing of Pregnant Women

HLTH 2400: Determinants of Health Behavior

Throughout this course, I completed a literature review on a public health topic relating to the Healthy People 2030 objectives. I studied intrapersonal, organizational, environmental, community, and policy factors, in addition to health behavior theories associated with HIV testing of pregnant women. I also examined suggestions for intervention. This was one of the most difficult assignments I encountered in a health course because I had never completed a literature review before. I had to learn a new type of writing style, as well as how to find relevant research sources and properly analyze them. Furthermore, I was able to improve my critical reading and evaluation skills.

The Health of Afghanistan

HLTH 4700: Global Health

As a final paper, I was tasked to analyze and present three key health issues in a low-income country that related to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. I chose Afghanistan, as it is the 21st least developed country in the world and has suffered several health consequences due to its political instability and conflict. This assignment proved difficult as Afghanistan has a complex history and I had to summarize it, as well as its relation to the country's health in a concise manner. Choosing three health issues that I believed to need the most attention also took a lot of research and consideration. However, I really enjoyed writing this paper and I think that I improved my persuasive writing skills with this assignment. It was interesting to study another country so intensely and I was able to broaden my worldview as well.
